Termbases, Translation Memories and Corpora

Translation technology is the original driver and core competitiveness of language services. We have always stayed ahead of the industry in adopting translation technology. Termbases, translation memories and corpora are of great significance during the translation process. Generally, termbase, translation memory and corpus management is conducted throughout translation management. Due to the increasingly diverse demands for translation services, there is a shift from emphasizing the internal relationship between a source text and corresponding translation to focusing on the external relationship regarding systematization, socialization, specialization, and industrialization. It is not hard to see that the same signs in public spaces involve literal translation, transliteration, and free translation, some of which are even incorrect. Terminologies not only determine the appropriateness of a translation, but also, on a broader level, concern whether China's thought and culture can be integrated into the world and even influence the global landscape.

In the era of big data across the globe, termbase, translation memory and corpus management has become the core of translation. Based on personalized client needs, we have established an effective language asset management system combining the systematicity, integrity and relevance in the information age. It integrates termbase, translation memory and corpus resources from various fields for processing and has established a dynamic data chain across languages, creating a comprehensive set of specific termbases, translation memories and corpora. We customize termbases, translation memories and corpora for free for long-term clients, including specialized services (termbases, translation memories, and translation style guides) and value-added services (shared industry-specific corpora, corpus retrieval, corpus denoising/cleaning, and multilingual parallel corpora).

Translation Style Guide:

With further differentiation, the translation industry demands increasing precision and diversity in translation styles. Concretely, translation styles are reflected in genre, language styles, expression habits, sentence patterns, word selection, tones, rhetoric, etc. We provide clients with a wide range of value-added services, for example, translation style consistency. It gains deep insights into client needs to develop tailored translation solutions, thus satisfying their diverse requirements.

Other requirements and precautions from clients

Termbase (TB):

Termbase management refers to the management of terminology resources to meet translation requirements. To ensure the accuracy of terminologies, we create a termbase for each long-term client. With the implementation of translation projects, industry-specific terminologies are updated on a regular basis, and the usage of such terminologies is standardized and unified, in a bid to maximize the satisfaction of clients' individualized needs.

A termbase contains company names, department names, title names, brand names, product names, person names, place names, slogans, technology names, unique corporate culture, and industry terms.

Translation Memory (TM):

The data in a translation memory should be correct, timely and authoritative. We create a translation memory for each long-term client. The methods and procedures for creating translation memories vary according to the intended use, ensuring that data quality meets the requirements of translation practices.

The quality of data in a translation memory is essential to computer-assisted translation (CAT), which directly influences the quality of translated texts. We make quality a top priority when building a translation memory. The process involves selection, cleaning, alignment, merging and integration, thereby maximizing the benefits of translations and improving clients' satisfaction with translation quality and progress.

Corpus types are listed as follows:

Parallel corpora: Source language + target language

Bilingual parallel corpora: English + Chinese or German + Chinese

Multilingual parallel corpora: More than two languages

Bidirectional parallel corpora: English-Chinese + Chinese-English

Unidirectional parallel corpora: English-Chinese or Chinese-English
