Simultaneous interpreting, also known as conference interpreting, refers to the real-time translation of a speaker’s message into another language without interrupting the flow of the speech. In a conference setting, interpreters work from booths, where they listen to the speaker through an audio system and simultaneously render the message into the target language. Because simultaneous interpreting allows the meeting to proceed without pauses for translation, it greatly reduces overall meeting time. As a result, it has become the preferred mode of interpretation for major international conferences.

Modes of simultaneous interpreting:

Unscripted simultaneous interpreting: It refers to situations where interpreters work without any prepared script. Relying entirely on short-term memory, interpreters listen and translate simultaneously, meeting the high demands of interpretation.

Script-based simultaneous interpreting: This mode can be divided into two cases. In the first case, only the speaker’s script is available, and interpreters must listen to the speech while simultaneously following the script to deliver accurate interpretation. In the second case, both the original script and a translated version are provided. Here, interpreters engage in simultaneous reading, but must still closely monitor the speaker for additions, omissions, or deviations to ensure interpretation remains faithful to the live speech received via audio.

Whispered interpreting: In this mode, no interpretation equipment is used. The interpreter sits next to the target listener and provides real-time whispered translation while listening to the speaker.

Relay simultaneous interpreting: This mode is used in international conferences involving three or more languages. Taking a three-language scenario as an example: After the speaker delivers the message in the source language (A language), one interpreter in a booth first renders it into a second language (B language). A second interpreter, working in another booth, then listens to the B-language interpretation and subsequently interprets it into a third language (C language). Since the C-language interpreter does not have direct access to the original A-language speech and relies entirely on the B-language output, the quality of the B-language interpretation is critical. Any deviation or inaccuracy at this stage can significantly affect the final C-language output. Relay simultaneous interpreting requires close coordination among interpreters of different languages to ensure the speaker’s message is conveyed as accurately as possible and to minimize information loss.
