语言节省是现代语言发展的一个重要原则。随着科学技术和社会生活各方面的变化和发展，词汇的缩略形式大量产生并得到普遍使用。英语和汉语都有大量的简略语，这是因为无论是汉语还是英语，人们感到全称太长，妨碍思想交流的速度，需要有一个较少的语言单位来替代。因此，缩略词和简略语应运而生。使用缩略词语的条件之一就是既要简略，又不能妨碍理解。正是因为这一特点，缩略语和简略语的翻译尤为困难。如果按照一个国家或地区的缩略词和简略语生造一个对应的缩略词语介绍完全不熟悉其内容的另一国家的人们，就达不到确切传达概念的翻译目的。因此，翻译缩略词或简略语一定要慎重。
1.汉语简略语的涵义
汉语中大量的简略语是约定俗成的，为全社会所承认或接受。有的简略词语是说话人在特定的语境中临时简化的词，只有在一定的上下文里才能明白其含义，如“三观”（人生观、世界观和价值观）教育。很多简略词语是由数词加上最说明问题的关键词构成的，如“四化建设”。
汉语简略词语包括以下缩略现象：
1.复杂名称的简缩，如：“政协”（中国人民政治协商会议）；
2．名词性词组的简略，如：“一国两制”，“和平共处五项原则”；
3．非名词性词组的简略，如：“复关”（恢复中国关税和贸易总协定缔约国地位），“三权（立法、司法和行政）分立”；
4．名词的别称，如：“南南合作”，“南北问题”；
5．数词缩语（即联语的简略形式，由基数词和联语中相同的词联合而成），如：“两个凡是”（“凡是毛主席作出的决策，我们都坚决维护；凡是毛主席的指示，我们都始终不渝地遵循”）；
6．利用与全称或原固定词组有联系的日期、地点等代替全称和固定词组，如：“八•一九”事件、“九 一八”事变。
2.简略语的翻译方法
（1）按简称意译
在翻译缩略词或简略语时一般均采用意译的办法，以全译简，还原其全称。
1）老少边穷地区（老解放区、少数民族地区、边疆地区和穷困地区）the old liberated areas, ethnic minority areas, remote border areas and poverty-stricken areas
2）“文革”（文化大革命）the Culture Revolution
3）政协（中国人民政治协商会议）the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference
4）“五讲四美三热爱”（讲文明、讲礼貌、讲卫生、讲秩序、讲道德，心灵美、语言美、行为美、环境美和热爱祖国、热爱社会主义、热爱共产党）“Five Stresses, Four Points of Beauty and Three Aspects of Love” (Stress on decorum, manners, hygiene, discipline and morals; Beauty of the mind, language, behavior and the environment; Love for the motherland, the socialist system and the Communist Party); the five-four-three moral education campaign
5）“三通”（通邮、通商、通航）three direct links of mail, trade and air and shipping services
6）“三个面向”(面向现代化、面向世界、面向未来) to gear education to the needs of modernization, the world and the future
7）“双百方针”(百花齐放、百家争鸣) Let a hundred flowers blossom and a hundred schools of thoughts contend.
8）“一国两制”(一个国家，两种制度) one country, two systems
9）“三从四德”（在家从父，出嫁从父，夫死从子；妇德，妇容，妇言，妇工）the three obediences (in ancient China a woman was required to obey her father before marriage, her husband during married life, and her sons in widowhood) and four virtues (fidelity, physical charm, propriety in speech and efficiency in needle work); wifely submission and virtues
10) “三无人员”（无合法证件、合法居所、合法职业）migrants with no legitimate ID card, lawful residence or jobs
